Tonight I figured out why our air is so bad up here in North Texas. At the first DFW state smog meeting in 4 years, Susana Hildebrand, Chief Engineer/Deputy Director, TCEQ asked the following question:

“What does natural gas have to do with it. We’re talking about smog.”

Holy smokes! No wonder our air just keeps getting worse! So I made this diagram for Susana. Someone please make sure she sees it.


From EDF’s analysis:

  • The oil and gas industry releases about 42 tons of ozone forming VOC emissions per day in Wise County.
  • The oil and gas industry releases about 37 tons of ozone forming VOC emissions per day in Denton County.
  • 100 tons of VOC emissions are produced daily from all of the cars and trucks in the nine-county DFW ozone non-attainment area.

42 tons per day from Wise + 37 tons per day from Denton =

79 tons per day of ozone forming VOCs in 2 counties from Barnett Shale drilling.

    It's simple, Susana. Flaring & non controlled diesel motors (like used on wells) make fine particles & NOx. Venting, produced water, & leaks release VOC's. Gas turbine compressors make NOx.

    VOC's+NOx+UV rays from the Sun=Ozone.

    Hint: Back in 1984, Hot Rod Magazine gave an easy to understand section about smog. Autos are just part of the problem.

    Also, flaring makes CO & various HC polymers than are not good to breath.

    They've been using NOx controls on diesels to run O&G wells in California for almost 20 years. I see them still working along the I5 as of last week.

    Susana could not disguise her disdain for the public. Her eye and head rolling were straight out of The Exorcist.

    She's just a rat. She was absolutely indignant at the DISH meeting a few months back. screaming at us "I don't have to be here! I don;t have to take this from you!" And then Megan Collins ripped her a new one. We saw this very same behavior from her last night. It didn't go unnoticed that she left not only right at 9PM, but right as the one resident was speaking. You'll note that she kicked off the meeting stating that the purpose of the meeting was to listen to what we had to say. My wife pointed out that our 10 year old Reilly could hang longer than she could-9 pm is Reilly's bed time, and we live over an hour away. Poor Susanna couldn't take the heat.
