From Don YoungThe Fort Worth City Council is poised to say what FWCanDo has been saying for Five Long Years:
Just Say NO!Mayor Moncrief and eight council members have a choice to make tonight. They can either allow Chesapeake Energy and few greedy mineral owners to destroy another neighborhood or they can Just Say NO to irresponsible drilling.Miraculously, even the Fort Worth Star-Telegram editorial board has disapproved the latest outrageous request from Chesapeake. The proposed pad-site sits between the historic African-American neighborhood of Como and the posh Ridglea neighborhood and shopping district. It is very telling of Chesapeake that they would consider this heavily traveled area for another of their pollution-generating industrial sites. From the Trinity Trees, to city parks, schools, churches, you name it, gas drillers have exercised no shame as to where they will extract their dirty fossil fuel. Nor has the City Council been shy about aiding and abetting their schemes. But tonight might be different. If you care to witness this potentially historic council meeting, show up tonight at 6:30 pm.DY
Here’s the latest:
awwwww, ain’t it sweet? They DO care, after all. Or do they? When in doubt, refer to Rule #1:
Never believe anything gas drillers say. They are compulsive liars.“Dear Mayor Moncrief and Council Members:
Chesapeake respectfully withdraws our application for four wells on the proposed Westridge site located at 3900 Bryant Irvin Road . While we have the support and encouragement of hundreds of mineral owners who could have their minerals produced from this site, it is clear to us the majority of Council does not support our request for a waiver In absence of that support we feel the most responsible action is to withdraw.”
Thank you.

I have heard some rumors about how disrespectfully CHK actually was to the people in Westridge and Como.
- I heard they offered the community of Como $100,000/year for 7 years.
- I heard they tried to pit the white community against the black community.
But, the Westridge and Como communities banded together. So…
But, please be wary people! CHK will be out with their checkbooks in hand offering more money and applying more pressure…
Note to CHK: Next time you try to manipulate people with Jesus, be sure you get ministers the community actually likes and trusts.

…company said it has received more than 900 postcards and online responses in support of the drill site…
http://www.star-telegram.com/2010/08/09/2393816/fort-worth-city-council-to-consider.html
Now I'm almost disappointed that we may never find out how many of the "online responses" came from an ISP in Oklahoma and how many of the "postcards" (really, does anyone really keep a supply of postcards for this purpose, or are they leftovers with Mickey Mouse on the front?) were postmarked 73154.
My deepest condolences to the 900 people who wanted their mailbox money bad enough to wish a gas well on their neighbor less than 300 feet away.

This is an historic day in Ft. Worth!
Many of us have worked tirelessly to bring low and no emission technology to the gas fields next to our homes, our schools and our offices in Ft. Worth. Time and time again, we were let down by this city council and sacrificed to the Shale. There was never any reason for that to have happened. There has never been any reason why minerals cannot be extracted and the people kept safe with modern technology except that you, the gas companies, refused to use it and our elected officials refused to hold you accountable. Together, you refused to keep us safe.
Now we have refused you. We refuse your toxics, we refuse your offers to buy our communities, we refuse your attempts to turn black against white.
This community stood firm; we stood shoulder to shoulder with one another as neighbors.
We know you will be back, Chesapeake, for you truly believe that everything has a price including our quality of life and our very homes, our very lives. But you may be exceptionally and wonderfully surprised.
Well done to all in Como and Westridge. What you have done today is truly great.

Bravo! It may just be one momentary victory in this ongoing nightmare…but it's a very important battle won. Thank you Como and Westridge for giving the rest of us some hope. We start again tomorrow.

Repub vs. Dem doesn't work, black vs white doesn't work. Silly Chesapeake, the common bond is community. Learn it, know it, respect it.
