A mix of volatile organic chemicals coming from the process of fracking oil and gas wells poses a health risk to people living within a half-mile of a drilling site, according to a new study by the University of Colorado-Denver School of Public Health.

Baseline testing when drilling was just getting started in Argyle showed 7 detects of the 84 chemicals typically tested for by TCEQ. Follow up testing on the lot where the high school band practices showed 65 detects of the 84 chemicals typically tested for by TCEQ. (Flowback: How the Texas Natural Gas Boom Affects Health and Safety) The lot is 1/2 mile from the offending facility.
I have asked many scientists this question: What is the additional risk to our children when they go from breathing 7 chemicals to a cocktail of 65 chemicals. To date, no one has been able to answer with anything besides, “We don’t know.”

I don’t think saying “I don’t know” is entirely accurate. I would suggest that not fully knowing does not and should not be taken as that scientists don’t know something. That said, I find it outrageous that people like Ed Ireland and even David Poole seem to think they can dictate how much poison my child can be exposed to, when these same people aren’t anywhere near it themselves.
I am living proof that 1,500 feet is not far enough, yet the City of Arlington’s setback is a mere 600 feet – written by the industry.
As someone who sleeps evey night with his head on a pillow about 500 feet from a producing well, this troubles me.
