Governor Richardson Announces Six Month Oil & Gas Drilling Moratorium in the Galisteo Basin. He says more research is needed. Imagine that, Fort Worth–researching the possible impact before you allow the operators to barrel in and set up shop.
“Gov. Bill Richardson didn’t waste any time diving back into New Mexico politics after dropping out of the presidential race. Friday afternoon, he called for a six-month ban on oil and gas drilling in the Galisteo Basin.
“I feel that there shouldn’t be drilling in the Galisteo Basin. In my judgment, it’s a very fragile ecosystem that has archaeological and groundwater issues,” Richardson told a group of reporters during a news conference Friday at the Roundhouse. He said the ban will allow time to study the water systems and archaeological resources of the area.”

Amazing that a poor state that could really use the money stops something like this, with a rich state like Texas can’t stop going back to its abusive drug dealer.

Well I thought Bill would have made a fine president, but not to be.
If one has been in Texas their complete life they most likely are no more than one generations from a family member that made a living associated with oil and it is hard for these folks to think of “oil” as bad and any attack on it is to them an attack on Texas. That is what we have to over come to save our water and health, and to move us on towards renewable energy in a big way. Germany is going for 30% solar in less than ten more years. Texas has more constant sunshine in a month than Germany has in a year*, but know of our government leaders are working us that direction.
*I am sure that is a Texas Brag – but you get the point.
