That was a big fat lie.
Cheney Acknowledges He Lied About China Drilling ‘60 Miles Off The Coast Of Florida
The problem, of course, is that the claim is completely false. After his claim was thoroughly debunked in the press, Cheney acknowledged that he had, in fact, lied in his speech, though his statement today offered no apology and issued only a half-hearted backtrack of his original claim:
GOP claim about Chinese oil drilling off Cuba is untrue
Cheney’s false comment on oil drilling attacked
Cheney: As for other locations, George Will pointed out in his column the other day that oil is being drilled right now 60 miles off the coast of Florida. But we’re not doing it, the Chinese are, in cooperation with the Cuban government. Even the communists have figured out that a good answer to high prices is more supply.
Nice reference to communism there, Dick.
Associated Press Online: Cheney’s office said in a statement to The Associated Press that the vice president had erred. “It is our understanding that, although Cuba has leased out exploration blocks 60 miles off the coast of southern Florida, which is closer than American firms are allowed to operate in that area, no Chinese firm is drilling there.”
But repeating a lie is something Republicans do well.
But the false claim has been repeated by those in favor of lifting a federal moratorium on drilling in offshore areas and in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. A variation on the theme was delivered by South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham on June 22 on NBC’s “Meet the Press”:
Graham: Cuba is doing a deal with China, potentially, to drill off our shores.
And then the stupid emails go around and around and around…

The Chinese have forged a deal with Cuban leader Fidel Castro to explore and tap into massive oil reserves almost within sight of Key West, Florida.
From The American Free Press
Vice President Dick Cheney has issued a statement to Associated Press backing off his claim that China was drilling 60 miles off the Florida coast: “It is our understanding that, although Cuba has leased out exploration blocks 60 miles off the coast of southern Florida, which is closer than American firms are allowed to operate in that area, no Chinese firm is drilling there.”
Drudge Report.
Cuba has leased 60 miles of exploration blocks. to China. I am pretty sure drilling is what they have in mind.

That myth has been thoroughly debunked by reputable sources and even by the VP who is a questionable source.

Hey Sharon,
Thought I would answer you on your blog for a bit. I have nine sources that I trust for information one being CNN Money. Now I realize with the net we can find 2000 places to agree on just about anything out here today. But, the places I go to have as a whole always seem to pan out in the long run,
But, having said that no blogger out here on the net to my knowledge has a direct line to the Chinese government or the Cuban government both of which are of Communist rule. governments. And there only a few left in the world that practices this sort of government So, it would seem that both countries would work in some sort of harmony on this oil issue. China is number two in oil consumption and no real oil reserves in there country they must go somewhere for their oil needs. It would make sense that Cuba a small Communist country sitting on a large oil reserve off there coast would be a logical choice for the Chinese government.
I have added your blog to my favorites
