FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DENTON RESIDENTS CONTINUE STRUGGLE AGAINST GAS WELLS
The City Leaders Can’t Ignore Us!
The health of our park, our homes, and our hospitals is at risk. This Tuesday, September 1, we demand that the City Council votes NO to the proposed gas well on Rayzor Ranch. This time, we are protesting outside of the City Hall, so they cannot ignore us.
After months of deliberations, the City Council of Denton has requested that the natural gas drilling company Range Resources prove that they cannot drill in other locations on the Rayzor Ranch lot. While Range Resources was the only party present at the last City Council meeting, the City Council realized they had no control over the location of the well, and a meeting was held with the City Attorney, Range Resources, and Allegiance Hillview the developer whom owns the surface rights and dictates where the gas well is built.
This development company and natural gas company have expressed no concern for citizens of Denton, their safety, and their neighborhood. They have chosen the location most convenient for their construction project, and most devastating for the residents and business in the area. In order for Allegiance to continue building a Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club on the north side of the property, they would choose to drill for natural gas dangerously close to doctors offices, a public park, a retirement home, a hospital, and within 200 feet of houses.
The City Council of Denton is afraid of receiving a lawsuit if they vote no to the drilling permit. The citizens of Denton are afraid of poisonous gas, poisonous groundwater, explosions, 18-wheelers, damage to houses’ foundations, and the expense of up to 3.5 million gallons of public drinking water. If the City Council is a representative body of the citizens of Denton, then why would they cater to the desires of these corporations that want to exploit us.
This Tuesday, September 1 at 5:00 PM, the citizens of Denton will protest the proposed natural gas well, on the steps of City Hall. With the City Council meeting shortly after at 6:30 PM, the council will have no choice but to listen to the voices of the people opposing this atrocity.
