Montana haults natural gas activity citing emissions!

Climate change cited as Mont. leases suspended.

BILLINGS, Mont. — A federal judge has approved a first-of-its-kind settlement requiring the government to suspend 38,000 acres of oil and gas leases in Montana so it can gauge how oil field activities contribute to climate change.

At issue are the greenhouse gases emitted by drilling machinery and industry practices such as venting natural gas directly into the atmosphere.

Industry could easily update their technology and use the emission control devices described in Drill-Right Texas: Best Oil & Gas Development Practices for Texas but, as I’ve mentioned previously, they won’t unless it’s mandated. That’s why Texas OGAP steering committee members worked for a year on Drill-Right Texas. Now it’s time for our legislators to get to work drafting the bills. Using emission control technology could eliminate 90% or more of these emissions.

Plaintiffs in the case were the Montana Environmental Information Center, the Oil and Gas Accountability Project and Wild Earth Guardians.
