I have a hard time writing about Global Warming. I get angry because we have allowed the fossil fuel industry to manipulate the Global Warming conversation and our response inaction. And then there are the pretend Christians who use biblical truthiness to escape responsibility. So I’m already pissed off before I even get started.
My friend Laura is in Cancun reporting on the COP 16. We are already too late to avoid a 2 to 2.5 degree temperature rise and that will cause some dramatic changes so they are now talking about what happens with a 4 degrees rise.
NEWS FLASH: We have to change our lifestyles, folks. And we have to do it NOW.
You should go read Laura’s blog post about her favorite speeches from the opening day. Laura has a quote from one speech that is inspirational but I almost hate to put it here. We’re so lazy and complacent that I think something really scary might be more needed. But I know there are also people who want to do something but don’t know what or how. So here goes:
“It is perfectly possible to sustain economic growth and fight poverty,” he said. “It is perfectly possible to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and not only sustain economic growth, but even find new ways of generating productivity and jobs in green development, green growth and sustainable development.”
He continued: “The key, then, my friends is to close both gaps at the same time, the gap between man and nature, and the gap between rich and poor.” That route exists, he said, and we should explore it together
But don’t linger in that feel good for long because Laura gives us the Bottom Line. It’s not pretty. And it’s the United States of America that is holding the entire planet hostage to our selfishness.
We suck so bad.
UPDATE: I have an idea about how we can slow down Global Warming: Line up all the morons like the anonymous commenter below and let them follow each other off a cliff.
About Sharon Wilson
Sharon Wilson is considered a leading citizen expert on the impacts of shale oil and gas extraction. She is the go-to person whether it’s top EPA officials from D.C., national and international news networks, or residents facing the shock of eminent domain and the devastating environmental effects of natural gas development in their backyards.

We had a unusually active Hurricane season this year. But, since they didn't have a major one hit the US, that fact has been ignored.
Then, we've had November Tornadoes in the US. And, not just 2 of them. Very, very rare.
The ocean is turning more acid. CO2, SOx,& NOx from burning fuels can leach into seawater, and cause this. Kill the ocean, kill the planet.

So, what exactly is your point? No one I know denies that they use energy. Here is the difference between you, Laura and me:
Laura and I want to be part of the solution even if it means we have to make dramatic changes.
You ARE the problem because your inability to think and reason rather than just parroting what Glenn Beck says keeps us mired in the same old destructive ways. That's why my sons and your children have no future.
When my children ask why we did nothing about Global Warming, I will be able to look them in the eye and say I tried. What will you say?
