Many of the people most affected by gas poisoning in North Texas are middle class white folks who: a) don't know their American history, and, b) associate getting arrested with people they'd rather not associate with.
Civil Disobedience is the tool for those who have nothing left to lose. For many of those middle class white people, getting arrested, even for a good and noble cause, is tainted with class and social stigma.
Only when you decide that your nice home is no good to you dead or dying, that your SUV isn't worth your dignity as a citizen, that your status is holding you back instead of allowing you to do what needs to be done, only then will you be ready to say, "That's enough," and plant yourself in front of a site gate, or operator's office door.
The people being poisoned in the Shale HAVE WITHIN THEMSELVES the power to form a passionate and effective army of resistance. To stop the trucks, to stop business as usual. No one is keeping them from doing this except their own trepidations and hang-ups.

One of my New Years resolutions is to stand on more street corners with protest signs. My reputation is already tainted so what the heck.
Thanks Brown Bess for putting the thoughts of many of us into words.

What I think is funny is how Texas is always taking on the Federal Government, screaming "States Rights" – rebelling against the very power structure that "oppresses" them. Then, they are surprised when a group of local cities (with some municipal leaders in tow) do the same thing.
What comes around, goes around.

No one is going to listen to a polite question and then use authority to "do the right thing" without struggle. We've pretty well learned that from experience. Now is the time to reason independently and act on one's convictions-not just with drilling but with other aspects of our government and weak economy, massive debt, etc, also. I agree we have to get past the stigma of being activists who speak out!

Kept my kid from school two days now because of fracking near his school when the winds were blowing his way. I'm talking with administration and teachers. On AISD facebook they repsonded.."We're sorry to hear that. We'll share your concerns with Carrizo." How's that 4 civil disobediance? My kid says he hates me. So wht's knew between a parent and a teen? He makes up his work. I do not want to reflect back if he gets sick and wonder why I did not have the guts to pull him from school out of harms way. Too bad he lives downwind a mile form UTA's 22 wells.

The schools will regret not protecting the children. You are right. They are wrong. Use the precautionary principle.
