By now, I’m sure you all know that power failures cause refineries, pipelines and natural gas facilities to backup and release huge amounts of toxic compounds into the air. If you haven’t heard about it, get caught up on this WFAA report.
Rather than planning in advance for all the different kinds of problems that could occur, officials try to figure out what happened after the fact.
Officials seek causes of power loss at Texas City plant
People were told to shelter in place, schools were closed.

About 25 people went to the hospital for respiratory distress. The VOC’s in the air were higher than TCEQ’s “handheld instrument” could register (probably the inaccurate Toxic Vapor Analyzer or TVA). In the Barnett Shale, VOCs are often higher than the TVA can measure.
It’s no wonder people were sick!
In the Barnett Shale, we know all about sulfur dioxide and the health impacts.
Sulfur dioxide health effects.
About Sharon Wilson
Sharon Wilson is considered a leading citizen expert on the impacts of shale oil and gas extraction. She is the go-to person whether it’s top EPA officials from D.C., national and international news networks, or residents facing the shock of eminent domain and the devastating environmental effects of natural gas development in their backyards.

If they self reported 43,000 pounds, rest assured it was at really at least 430,000 pounds.

Let me tell you about sulfur exposure. I am .5 to 1.5 miles from Natural Gas Extraction Facilities. This particular incidence the reported area was 1.5 miles.
I smelled sulfur at the house, specifically rotten eggs which is H2S, so I called TCEQ. The odor was gone by the time they got here at least that's what it stated in their report, and they got a magic wand reading of 6 ppb of sulfur dioxide.
That's not a lot, unless you've developed a sulfur allergy.
Sulfur allergies become worse the greater amount of sulfur one is exposed to. I believe, we will continue to see that number rise above the 1% due to the incessant crazy Natural Gas production WE ARE ALLOWING industry to do.
Mine came on with a H2S acute exposure last summer, where I didn't have any olfactory from May until October(which I'm pretty sure is why the TCEQ reports always say, "no odor present" and the sulfate concentration in the trinity aquifer bumped up to 110 mg/L.
I am over loaded and the sulfur is literally eating me alive.
I'm OK without going outside, even though that's how I make my living, and that is what I love to do, oh and it's making us abandon our dream home.
My skin is outrageous, I watch the lesions/rough patches grow every day and hope and pray I don't end up with Steven Johnson disease, which is life threatening.
I can't shower at home, Flower Mound, and apparently Grapevine anymore. That's convenient.
I am dizzy, I get dark spots in my peripheral vision, I cough every night, and sometimes through the day. I get headaches, I literally bounce off the hallway walls, my kidney's are on overload and ache frequently, my ph is a constant battle and I itch like I just rolled in poison ivy. Oh and I have had pulmonary distress twice.
Sulfur Allergies effect more the 1% of the population. With an increase in sulfur in the air, and water, this number will probably increase significantly. Right now we can estimate, effects 60,000 people in DFW.
Sulfur is used in all processes of Natural Gas Extraction: Hydrogen Sulfide is attached with the gas and enters the air simply with drilling and extraction. Carbon Disulphide, Dimethyl Disulphide is used during the casing to lubricate the bore head as well as remove the H2S from the Natural Gas and all of that enters into the air because we are allowing the industry to do it. Other sulfur compounds are used as biocides.
Yet, the TCEQ REFUSES to bring the sulfur trailer to North Texas because "it is too expensive", Ed Ireland refuses to tell the truth to the citizens of the Barnett Shale that Hydrogen Sulfide is found WITH THE GAS, the RRC refuses to protect the citizens of the United State of America US, (TEXAS and TEXANS)
I'm literally sick of the $hit and let me tell you how it feels to feel like I may die any day now.
Let's just say, I keep trucking through life to do everything I can do to make the citizens of my community more educated,
and to make Texas a better place to live.

To the sweet lady with the sulfer exposure….I cry as I read this..any sulfur product is the making for acid rain and that goes everywhere in everything. May our God the God of justice prevail over the gas mafia and His judgement reign down like acid reign on their souls for eternity.
Tues night I told Arlington City Council about the Texas City lockdown during the plants power outages about how the residents were advised to protect themselves and not go outside and "breathe the air".
Since the power outage from the storm of 4/11 and two drill sites had emission events (one that sickened a lady), I told council they should have called the areas affected like those calls at Texas City.
